As summer wanes, bird banding reveals the season's success story. At Fiddler's Creek, 36 birds were captured—mostly juveniles proving strong breeding results. Gray Catbirds led with 22 individuals, while a Common Yellowthroat returned exactly one year later, weighing more and thriving in familiar territory. And hummingbird bills tell us a special story.

Despite New Jersey's wettest May since 1990, our volunteers successfully installed 27 new kestrel boxes this spring. With 25 active nests across three counties and dedicated starling eviction efforts, it's shaping up to be a banner breeding season for American kestrels.

A chance discovery in January 2019 turned a tragic owl tale into a cherished keepsake. While exploring our front yard, we found a bird band attached to leg bones - likely from an owl pellet. Reporting the band to USGS revealed it belonged to an Eastern Screech Owl, banded locally. The band now lives on as my necklace, a unique piece of jewelry.
