New Jersey Audubon’s

World Series of Birding

Riding for a New Project!

This year Wild Bird Research Group will be represented at the 41st annual New Jersey Audubon’s World Series of Birding.  The New Jersey Audubon’s World Series of Birding is a competitive “Big Day” birding marathon where teams endeavor to see as many species of birds as possible in 24 hours to fundraise for their favorite environmental causes. We are back to back champions, looking to three peat!

Typically, teams set out by car in the early morning hours and begin their statewide quest to achieve the longest bird list.  Our team will add to this challenge by competing in the carbon-free category; instead of traveling by car, the team will attempt to see as many species as possible by bicycle.  The decision to compete carbon-free by bicycle, rather than by car, is in recognition of the challenges faced by birds and their environments due to human-caused climate change.  The team has been named the “Northern Sweat Owls” apropos of the 50+ mile route they plan to cycle during their big day cycling marathon.

Our goal is to raise $2,000 in donations

All donations to the Northern Sweat Owls will go directly toward the following of Wild Bird Research Group’s 2024 funding needs for their new American Kestrel project

  • Materials for American Kestrel Boxes, providing them with a location for nesting success
  • The ability to hire a Kestrel Volunteer coordinator, checking boxes, sorting through the video data, and publishing the results
  • Extra resources for equipment, we will be looking to operate between 10-15 cameras monitoring the boxes.

Meet the team

The team is being led by longtime WBRG field technician Ian Gray. Also pedaling for the Sweat Owls is WBRG research coordinator Tyler Christensen, WBRG Board member Jenn Rogers, and WBRG field technician Cody Panek.
