We’re so excited for you to join us for Wings Over Mercer, the Wild Bird Research Group’s brand-new fall migration bird-a-thon! Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions we’ve been hearing:
Q: When and where does Wings Over Mercer happen?
A: The competition runs on Saturday, October 4th, 2025 from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM anywhere in Mercer County, NJ. You can bird from your favorite park, your backyard, or even a quick walk around the block—just as long as it’s in Mercer County. You do not need to check in to begin the event
Q: Do I have to bird the entire day?
A: Not at all! Wings Over Mercer is designed to be flexible. Spend an hour, a morning, or the full day—your sightings count no matter how long you participate.
Q: How do the categories work?
A: Pick the one that fits you best:
- NOCS Solo Spotter – Solo birders compete for the highest species count and a chance to win a pair of Pro NOCS binoculars.
- Student Category – For Middle School, high school, and college birders.
- Organization Category – Teams from businesses, clubs, or nonprofits.
- Overall Category – Open to everyone; the day’s highest total wins.
- New to Birding Category – Perfect for beginners; you only need to bird for an hour or two to participate.
Q: I don’t own binoculars—can I still join?
A: Absolutely! Thanks to our friends at NOCS Provisions, we’ll have binoculars available to borrow so everyone can enjoy the day.
Q: How do I submit my sightings?
A: At the end of your birding time, submit your list digitally using eBird or in person at our check-in/finish station. Just tell us which category you’re in and we’ll take care of the rest. Winners will be announced at the wrap-up!
